American Walter Hagen (1892 - 1969), nicknamed "The Haig", was the flamboyant star with 44 career wins from 1914 through the mid-1930's, which included 11 majors championship victories... third in total major victories behind Jack Nicklaus with 18, and Tiger Woods currently with 14, and counting. (The artist's favorite quote about Hagen: "...He could relax sitting on a hot stove." -Tommy Armour, The American Golfer 1935) The artist created this striking print by digitally overlapping his gouache painting of Hagen with vertical strips from a grainy newspaper photo of Hagen from about 1919. The result is an image suggesting the past, but at the same time imbues a contemporary feel and the colorful showmanship Hagen brought to the game helping to elevate the public's perception of a professional golfer to that of a celebrity.
